| The Ross Crane House |

The Ross Crane House |
The current home of Georgia Beta was built in 1842 as
a showplace for a prominent architect-builder, Colonel
Ross Crane. The home is considered one of three perfect
examples of southern architecture in America. Further,
the Ross Crane House was listed on the prestigious
Historic American Building Survey conducted in 1936
and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
The house is a magnificent two storied structure with
soaring white columns and a massive square tapered portico
commanding a place of strategic importance to the vista of
downtown Athens. Included in this vista are the grounds
of 247 Pulaski Street where some of Northeast Georgia’s
oldest magnolias and boxwoods continue to thrive.
In January 2008, a major restoration project began on the Ross Crane home to preserve the integrity of the extraordinary experience that has been, and will continue to be, Georgia Beta of SAE. Renovations are scheduled to be completed in time for Fall semester 2008. Click here to see a virtual tour of the progress being made. |
